Claws Mail: the lightweight and powerful email client for Linux

Introduction to Claws Mail

\n

Claws Mail is a GTK+ based email client that stands out for its low resource consumption and high configurability. Although it originated in 2001 as a branch of Sylpheed, it has evolved into a mature and stable solution for Linux users who value speed and the freedom of free software. Its classic interface recalls desktop clients of the 90s, but beneath that appearance lies a powerful engine capable of handling multiple accounts, advanced filtering, and a wide range of plugins.

Advantages over other clients

\n

While many modern clients consume a lot of RAM and depend on heavy frameworks, Claws Mail keeps memory usage under 50 MB in typical use. This makes it ideal for older machines, netbooks, or servers without a heavy graphical environment. Moreover, its GPL license guarantees that anyone can inspect, modify, and redistribute the code without restrictions. The active community behind the project ensures frequent security updates and the incorporation of new features without losing the lightweight philosophy.

Advanced Customization

\n

One of Claws Mail’s greatest strengths is its plugin system. You can install extensions such as claws-mail-plugin-pgp to encrypt and sign messages with OpenPGP, claws-mail-plugin-vcalendar to manage appointments and tasks, or claws-mail-plugin-spamreport to send spam to services like SpamCop. Moreover, the client allows creating complex filters via a visual interface that combines header, body, and size conditions. Advanced users can directly edit the file ~/.claws-mail/accountrc to adjust parameters not exposed in the GUI, such as connection timeout or maximum number of download threads.
